About This Site
Freelance Finance is a site dedicated to the art of money management for self-employed creative types. The goal is to share ideas, results, techniques, news and real-life experiences—OK, sometimes complaints—with like-minded individuals whose careers often require that they fly by the seat of their financial pants. Ours is a site for writers, artists, website designers, caterers, actors, designers and a growing number of you who know both the joy of setting your own schedule and the agony of waiting by the mailbox for a check to arrive.
About Us
Muck & Mire are a husband-and-wife team of international creative geniuses whose investing acumen has netted them at least $12.34 in bank interest in the last month. Despite this stellar track record, neither of them had the good financial sense to marry someone with a real job and benefits. This is known in the business as “The Double Whammy.”
Muck is a freelance journalist, children’s book author and would-be novelist. He has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Wired and a number of science magazines.
Mire is a freelance journalist, author, producer, screenwriter and would-be memoirist. She has written for The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Village Voice, Discover, Saveur and many other publications.
Muck is Mac. Mire is PC. Muck is the Strunk to Mire’s White. They met in an actual office while holding down real jobs.
About the Monkey
Behold the Monkey.
![]()
The Monkey is prosperity. The Monkey is the gatekeeper of lost change and future dreams. The Monkey is at once hope and despair, triumph and defeat. An empty Monkey has all the potential in the world. A fat, happy, sated Monkey means beer and parking. Feeding the Monkey is not just about hoarding spare change. It is about nurturing your future and putting your finances first.
No matter who you are, it is always important to feed your Monkey.
